BIOGRAPHY

Alexander Ugay was born in 1978 in the city of Kyzylorda. Lives and works in the city of Almaty.

Photo and video artist Alexander Ugay in his works reveals the themes of memory and nostalgia, the interaction of history with today's reality and the future. This is partly due to the simultaneous use of 8-16 mm film cameras produced in Soviet times and modern digital recording devices. Many of Ugay's video projects are aimed at exploring the connections between collective and personal memory, collective and personal space, focusing on the concept of time and its flows. In recent years, Alexander Ugay has also been actively working with the installation medium.

Among the artist's recent exhibitions, it should be noted "Eurasian Utopias: Post Scriptum" at Suwon I'Park Museum of Art, Suwon (2018), Phantom Stories: Leitmotifs of Post-Soviet Asia at Lunds konsthall, Lund (2018), More than an Image. Less than an Object at Galeria Labirynt, Lublin (2017), Festivities Are Canceled! at the Kiev Biennale (2017), the 6th Moscow Biennale (2015), the Busan Biennale (2014), Promises of the Past at the Pompidou Center, Paris (2010), Younger Than Jesus at the New Museum, New York (2009) and the 9th Istanbul Biennale (2005).
